00:00Now, from the golden age of comics, welcome to Prisoners of the Incredible Plants.
00:08The planetary system had been inhabited up to Jupiter.
00:12Beyond that, the asteroid belts were unconquered and unexplored.
00:17But hardy space prospectors braved the dangers of uncharted space
00:22to bring back precious metals and minerals for Earth's millions.
00:25One such space transport was returning to Earth after a six-year journey
00:31when, without warning, loomed the giant, hollow asteroid
00:37containing a dreaded menace greater than any peril threatening the universe.
00:43To conquer it was difficult, but to fail meant death.
00:49We join space pilot Dan Dare and his crew
00:53as they explore the giant asteroid that has appeared before them.
00:59Great Scott! What is that thing out there?
01:02It looks like a giant asteroid!
01:06Cut the jets quick! We're being dragged down by its gravitational pull!
01:10Brace yourselves, we're going to crash!
01:13Barely had the rocket's engines been switched off
01:16when it shattered the gelatinous outer envelope of the strange asteroid's stratosphere.
01:21The ship then became sucked in with incredible strength
01:25towards what looked like a hard central core inside the ship.
01:29We find two of the crew sitting on the floor.
01:32Smoke from damaged pipes can be seen drifting in the air.
01:35We see a crewman leaning against the bulkhead and holding onto his leg.
01:39Ah! I think only my ankle sprained.
01:44Well, how about you and the others?
01:45Another crewman is leaning on the floor,
01:49his hand against the side of his head.
01:52His uniform ripped.
01:55No one's hurt, but we're all stunned.
01:59What kind of asteroid is this?
02:02Let's hope the ship hasn't been damaged too much.
02:06Looking at one of the gauges,
02:08crewman Lon reports,
02:09Captain,
02:10the meter's all registered that there's enough air outside for normal breathing.
02:16Captain Dare is unsure if the readings can be trusted.
02:21Nevertheless, Lon,
02:22we'll have to be careful.
02:24Dangers can lurk anywhere on an asteroid like this.
02:28Put on all of your equipment.
02:31Lon and Dawson venture outside the ship and begin to look around.
02:36First out is Lon.
02:37Here I go, sir.
02:40Say,
02:41the ground isn't too bad.
02:43It feels sort of spongy and resilient.
02:48From the ship's main hatch,
02:49the captain says,
02:51Cover him, Dawson.
02:53You other men stay close to each other
02:54and within five yards of the ship
02:57until we can determine our environment.
03:01Lon and Dawson are startled by what they see.
03:05Dawson,
03:06Look!
03:06This landscape is straight out of some prehistoric past.
03:12Hmm.
03:13The prehistoric past never contained as many different kinds of vegetation as this.
03:19The whole horizon is covered with them.
03:22The crew begins their exploration of the immediate terrain in earnest.
03:26To all sides of them there were huge ferns, towering plants, gigantic trees,
03:33and all sorts of weird, indescribable vegetation that literally covered the ground.
03:41Looking around, the captain issues an order.
03:44Well, there doesn't seem to be any signs of hostile life except for this jungle,
03:49but stick close anyway.
03:50Dawson, check the damage to the ship.
03:52Dawson climbs up on the ship's hull.
03:56Well, the hull is broken through in three places, Captain.
03:59We'll have to remold and weld the copper coating on it,
04:02or we'll never make it back to Earth.
04:04Looking up at Dawson, the captain replies,
04:08Well, all the ship's controls are working,
04:11which means we can blast off from here as soon as we're finished.
04:15Facing his men,
04:16Captain Dare continues to bring them up to date on the situation.
04:20Yet, we were powerless to pull free from this freakish gravity
04:24when we entered and when we sighted the asteroid.
04:27That means we have to use every auxiliary engine we have
04:31to blast off in order to combat the pull.
04:34Standing next to some equipment,
04:36Lon reports,
04:38Luckily, we have all the mining equipment to find the copper ore for the hull.
04:43Four of the crew set out to find the necessary metal ore
04:46that could be molded onto the hull
04:49while the remaining two men stay behind to guard the ship.
04:53The captain issues his orders.
04:55Each man will cover the other.
04:58Adams, swing that ore detector more towards your right.
05:02Will the crew find the copper ore they need?
05:04What will they find as they explore the asteroid?
05:08Find out more in the next episode of
05:10Prisoners of the Incredible Plants.
