The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu is a 1929 American pre-Code drama film directed by Rowland V. Lee and starring Warner Oland as Dr. Fu Manchu. It was the first Fu Manchu film of the talkie era. Since this was during the transition period to sound, a silent version was also released in the United States, although only the sound version exists today.

Plot: A young white girl, Lia Eltham, is left in Fu Manchu's care. A British regiment, chasing Boxer rebels, fires on Fu Manchu's home, killing his wife and child. When Lia Eltham grows up, he uses her as an instrument for revenge, killing all descendants of those who killed his family. Opposing Fu Manchu are Police Inspector Nayland Smith and Dr. Jack Petrie.

00:04:28They will not touch the house of food.
00:04:30Why, even the coolers in the streets know that I am dedicating my life to mankind.
00:04:37Has the lipo returned with Dr. Eltham's time?
00:04:42Yes, exhausted one.

00:05:43Master, I beg you, waken the child.
00:05:50You are quite right.
00:05:52If anything should happen to me, no one could waken her.

00:12:40I'm afraid.
00:12:41It's my ankle.
00:12:42Please don't be quite.
00:12:44I may be quite.
00:12:45I may be rather a clumsy brute, but I'm also a doctor.
00:12:47Won't you let me see if I can help you, please?
00:12:49Oh.

00:13:24Oh.
00:13:25No.
00:13:26It's the fog.
00:13:28I'm afraid I-I don't know where I am.
00:13:31I'm lost.
00:13:32Oh.
00:13:33Well, now you're found.
00:13:35Come, we'll find a cab together.
00:13:37Or taxi!
00:13:44The drive to 624 Park Lane, please.
00:13:54Where on earth were you going? Alone?
00:13:58That's just what I was trying to remember.
00:14:03Oh, I'm still confused.
00:14:06I recall Jim Lee looking for a certain house in this neighborhood.
00:14:11In this neighborhood?
00:14:12Well, possibly I could help you find it.
00:14:15Was it on this street?
00:14:17I think so.
00:14:19But still I'm not sure.
00:14:21Oh, I'm only still.
00:14:24As though I've been walking in my sleep.
00:14:27Until I bumped into you and then I seemed to wake up.
00:14:31That's strange.
00:14:33Has that ever happened to you before?
00:14:37Yes.
00:14:39Yes, several times.
00:14:40My guardian is a doctor and he's done everything to cure me.
00:14:45But it still goes on and on.
00:14:49Oh, I wish I might stop. It frightens me so.
00:14:53There, there. I'm sure something could be done about it.
00:14:56Oh, do you really think so?
00:14:58I know so.
00:14:59Oh, here's my house.
00:15:04If you don't mind, I'll quit and get my medicine case before I take you home.
00:15:06Wait! Where are you going?
00:15:19Taxi! Taxi!
00:15:20Taxi!
00:15:22Here's to grandfather on his birthday.
00:15:25He may be 80 today, but he can still down a bottle, kiss a girl and be up at daybreak for the hunt.
00:15:40It'll be the same when I'm 100.
00:15:42Oh, he's a jolly good fellow. For he's a jolly good fellow. For he's a jolly good fellow. And so say all of us. Father.
00:15:46Hello, sir.
00:15:47Hey, you're on my foot.
00:15:48I beg your pardon?
00:15:49You're on my foot, sir.
00:15:50Oh, so I am, sir. I'm rightly sorry.
00:15:52Sylvester, you ought to get some I'd lattice.
00:15:53Oh, I'd rather not, sir. I've been told they make me look slightly a-pattery little-toe who I'm the little girl.
00:15:57Now, for for he's a jolly good fellow. For he's a jolly good fellow. And so say all of us. Father.
00:16:04Yes, sir.
00:16:08Hey, you're on my foot.
00:16:09I beg your pardon?
00:16:10You're on my foot, sir.
00:16:12Oh, so I am, sir. I'm rightly sorry.
00:16:15Sylvester, you ought to get some I'd Lattice.
00:16:18Oh, I'd rather not, sir.
00:16:19I've been told they make me look slightly effeminate.
00:16:23Well, what is your errand?
00:16:26Oh, sir, most extraordinary, sir.
00:16:28After typing your letters, I felt rather faint,
00:16:31so I rang for a cup of custard.
00:16:34Well, just as I was spooning up the stuff,
00:16:37I suddenly became aware of a veiled lady hovering over me.
00:16:41Well, of course, it's not polite to go on spooning up custard
00:16:44with veiled ladies hovering over you.
00:16:46So I got up, and she handed me this letter.
00:16:50Why, it's addressed to me.
00:16:52Yes, sir. I stooped over to read the address.
00:16:55When I looked up again, she was gone.
00:16:58Hmm. Was she tall or short?
00:17:03She had on a long black cloak, so she might have been tall.
00:17:08Or else a short girl on stilts.
00:17:12She may have been the one that you have been looking for, Jack.
00:17:16Not likely. What did she bring, your grandfather?
00:17:19Well, let me see.
00:17:24That's weird. It's a Chinese dragon.
00:17:27Well, what's that red stain on it?
00:17:29Blessed if I know.
00:17:31Inspector Nayland Smith, Scotland Yard.
00:17:37Nayland Smith?
00:17:39Why, I was up at Oxford with him.
00:17:42Scotland Yard?
00:17:44Show him in.
00:17:46I say I didn't know that you knew him, Dad.
00:17:49Why, he's the greatest criminologist alive.
00:17:51I place him now.
00:17:52He specializes in murder mystery.
00:17:55Exactly.
00:17:56General Petrie.
00:17:58I'm sorry to intrude, gentlemen,
00:18:00but I've something of the utmost importance to communicate.
00:18:03Certainly, Inspector.
00:18:04Come in.
00:18:05Come in.
00:18:08Sir John Petrie Adley.
00:18:09Delighted to see you again, sir.
00:18:11My son, Dr. Petrie.
00:18:14How do you do?
00:18:15Delighted, Inspector.
00:18:16And my secretary, Mr. Sylvester Wadsworth.
00:18:21I'm tired.
00:18:25How do you do?
00:18:26General, you'll forgive me if I come straight to the point.
00:18:30I understand you saw service in China during the Boxer Rebellion.
00:18:34Yes.
00:18:35My son and I were at the relief of the legations.
00:18:38In that case, I must warn you that you're in the gravest danger.
00:18:45Oh, I say that's strange.
00:18:47I could have sworn that I locked that window before dinner.
00:18:50Well, that's clear.
00:18:51Somebody's broken the glass and unlocked the door.
00:18:53Where'd you get that?
00:18:54The dragon.
00:18:55Turn off those lights.
00:18:56How do you close these glasses?
00:18:57How do you close them?
00:18:58There.
00:18:59How do you close them?
00:19:00There.
00:19:01Is everything closed?
00:19:02Yes, everything's quite closed, Inspector.
00:19:03Turn on the lights.
00:19:04Turn on the lights.
00:19:05Oh, I say...
00:19:06Turn on the lights.
00:19:07Why doesn't somebody...
00:19:08I'm trying to, but I can't find the confounded button.
00:19:11What is the meaning of all this?
00:19:13General, I came to warn you of impending danger, but I find it's already upon you.
00:19:20Don't not.
00:19:21Did you know a Colonel La Salle in the French Army?
00:19:22Yes.
00:19:23I met him at Pekin.
00:19:24Seems to me he died rather saddly some years ago.
00:19:25I've been a friend of the French Army.
00:19:26Yes, sir.
00:19:27I met him at Pekin.
00:19:31Colonel, I came to warn you of impending danger.
00:19:34But I find it's already upon you.
00:19:37Don't not.
00:19:44Did you know Colonel LaSalle in the French Army?
00:19:48Yes.
00:19:49I met him at Pekin.
00:19:51Seems to me he died rather sadly some years ago.
00:19:54He did.
00:19:56Very suddenly.
00:19:58Did you know Brigadier General Van Haup?
00:19:59Yes.
00:20:01That was the fellow who was found dead in his garden.
00:20:05Both these men were in the siege of the legation.
00:20:08Both of them died under mysterious circumstances.
00:20:11In both cases, this blood-stained dragon was received just before death.
00:20:19I don't understand what you mean.
00:20:21I mean that for years somebody has been systematically poisoning the officers of the Boxer Rebellion.
00:20:29First in Russia, then Germany, then France.
00:20:33And now this fiend has reached London and Scotland Yard has taken charge.
00:20:41This dragon means that you are marked for the next victim.
00:20:45Oh, nonsense.
00:20:47Why, that's perfectly fantastic.
00:20:50Now, surely the inspector cannot be serious.
00:20:56Don't touch that!
00:20:58Quick, heavens!
00:20:59Don't breathe that stuff!
00:21:00Don't breathe it!
00:21:01Get, get!
00:21:01I'll open the window!
00:21:03Doctor, are you there?
00:21:05There's a man climbing garden wall.
00:21:06I'll open the door.
00:21:13Doctor, are you there?
00:21:16There's a man climbing garden wall.
00:21:17I'll open it.
00:21:18Follow him.
00:21:22How is he, Doctor?
00:21:22Why, we're too late.
00:21:32He's dead.
00:21:36The rest of us have got a full breath of that.
00:21:38We should all be dead.
00:21:41You see, gentlemen,
00:21:45I am very serious.
00:21:52You have delivered the dragon?
00:22:19Even as you commanded, oh, Master.
00:22:21Yes.
00:22:23It is well.
00:22:28Detail her, that I may bring her out of her son.
00:22:51You have done my bidding?
00:22:54Yes, Master.
00:22:56The Englishman is dead.
00:22:59Why?
00:23:21Yes, Master.
00:23:26The Englishman is dead.
00:23:27The Englishman is dead.
00:23:27The Englishman is dead.
00:23:28The Englishman is dead.
00:23:36Give me two more lives,
00:23:37gods of my ancestors.
00:23:40Only two more.
00:23:43Now, let the accursed house of Petrie atone to the house of fools.
00:23:57Master, this contemptible one was fouled by a police person.
00:24:06He waits in the street below.
00:24:13So, can you walk through the front?
00:24:18I now forget to walk through the house and see it for you.
00:24:23The second time I take on a street.
00:24:27My father is a prisoner in the house.
00:24:32The second time I walk through the house is a prisoner ofネyre.
00:24:37Quickly.
00:24:55Quickly.
00:25:07Have you completed the examination, doctor?
00:25:23Yes. His heart failed.
00:25:26If I hadn't been here at the time, I would have sworn natural death.
00:25:29That's true of all the dragon murders.
00:25:32Obvious methods are never used.
00:25:34The crime is covered up by appearing to be natural death.
00:25:38I tell you, Petrie, we are dealing with the diabolical genius of a madman.
00:25:43Have you no suspicion who he is?
00:25:46A suspicion, yes, but not a certainty.
00:25:50When we are certain, we'll spring our trap.
00:25:55Like that.
00:25:58Until then, you must leave London.
00:26:00Are you asking me to run away?
00:26:04Exactly.
00:26:06The general wouldn't heed my warning, but you must.
00:26:10You're a marked man.
00:26:15Petrie resident.
00:26:18Must stop to Inspector Smith at once.
00:26:21It's the chap you sent after the man, Inspector.
00:26:24Yes, Smith speaking.
00:26:27Clarkson reporting.
00:26:29They got me.
00:26:30I'm through.
00:26:33What?
00:26:34Singapore Chinese.
00:26:36Clarkson.
00:26:38Clarkson, where are you?
00:26:40Uh...
00:26:46Good.
00:26:49Wainwood.
00:26:51Here, Inspector.
00:26:52Get my hat in coat.
00:26:53Yes, sir.
00:26:54What's happened?
00:26:55Clarkson is dead.
00:26:57Petrie, it's necessary for me to go to Lyme House and follow a new clue.
00:27:01And I must feel that you and your son are safely out of London.
00:27:04Might I suggest your country place, sir?
00:27:06We'll be perfectly safe at Redmo.
00:27:08Capital, capital.
00:27:09I'll send a couple of my men to guard you.
00:27:10But look here, you know, Smith.
00:27:13Oh, very well.
00:27:14I'll go.
00:27:15Goodbye, Petrie.
00:27:16Goodbye.
00:27:17Be careful.
00:27:19Goodbye, Doctor.
00:27:20Wait.
00:27:20I'm going along with you, Inspector.
00:27:24Hmm?
00:27:25I must warn you, Doctor.
00:27:27You're taking your life in your hands.
00:27:30They've got your grandfather.
00:27:32They'll try to get your father.
00:27:34They'll try to get you.
00:27:36I'm in on this thing to the finish.
00:27:37We may need a doctor before we're through.
00:27:43Goodbye, Father.
00:27:45Sylvester, you'll keep an eye on Sir John while I'm gone.
00:27:48Of course.
00:27:49And remember, Petrie, take no chances.
00:27:54You'll never be out of danger until we find this murderer.
00:27:58Don't be alarmed, John.
00:28:08I shall stay with you every minute.
00:28:13If you'll only stay with me.
00:28:15You men mixed to the crowd.
00:28:45Not around Singapore Charlie's.
00:28:47If you hear a shot, raid the place.
00:28:51Got your revolver, Petrie?
00:28:52Right here.
00:28:53Right-o.
00:28:54Come on, Weyman.
00:28:55Oh, if I live next door to you.
00:29:01Oh, if I live next door to you.
00:29:05Oh, if I live next door to you.
00:29:14Let's see if you need to burn it all.
00:29:17Oh, if I live next door to you.
00:29:21Come on, Weyman.
00:29:23Come on, Weyman.
00:29:24Come on, Weyman.
00:29:25Come on, Weyman.
00:29:26Come on, Weyman.
00:29:27Charlie, Charlie.
00:29:42Give it three, man.
00:29:43One for me.
00:29:43One for me.
00:29:44One for now.
00:29:44Come on, buddy!
00:29:51Fuegan, juegan! No hablan tanto!
00:29:55Oh, my! I thought that was...
00:29:59Don't you see?
00:30:04Yes, very good indeed.
00:30:08If we never look beyond us,
00:30:11If we never see the stride stings that we see...
00:30:19Yes, sir, ma'am?
00:30:21Yes, I'm in this next door.
00:30:25Hey, every night...
00:30:41I'm in this next door.
00:30:45Hold that door.
00:30:49Looks like a blind alley.
00:30:51Quick, up here.
00:30:55Let's separate. You go that way.
00:30:59You go that way.
00:31:02Hey!
00:31:03Oh!
00:31:04There's a, there's a, there's a, there's a, there's a...
00:31:29Come and get down.
00:31:30Put that down.
00:31:43I say, I've seen you before.
00:31:47Last night, the fog's your ankle.
00:31:51Why, you're the girl who disappeared.
00:31:55Yes.
00:31:56And you're the doctor.
00:31:58Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you.
00:32:02So you're not a doctor after me.
00:32:04You're a burglar.
00:32:05And you wanted to come home with me that night to steal.
00:32:09Oh, now listen. You must.
00:32:12Well, put that thing down.
00:32:25Now I'll listen.
00:32:28I'm not a burglar, really, I'm not.
00:32:30I was in the gambling room below and there was trouble.
00:32:32I got mixed up in it and they chased me up here.
00:32:37So you're not a burglar.
00:32:38You're a gambler.
00:32:41They're out there. They'll hear us.
00:32:44Well...
00:32:45Well...
00:32:45Good night.
00:32:47Home and...
00:32:47Home and...
00:32:48Home and...
00:32:49Good night.
00:32:53One minute.
00:32:55Home and...
00:32:56Good night.
00:32:58Home and...
00:32:58Home and...
00:32:59Home and...
00:33:00Home and...
00:33:01One minute.
00:33:06What do you want?
00:33:13Oh, there's no one here. Come and look for yourself.
00:33:39I say that was wonderful. You're saving my life.
00:33:44Perhaps. I haven't quite made up my mind.
00:33:48I'd go at once if you wish.
00:33:50Oh, no. They might hurt you.
00:33:56Oh, please, wait just a little minute.
00:33:59I'll show you a way that is safe.
00:34:06So you don't really think I'm a burglar after all?
00:34:10No.
00:34:13But you must tell me what you're doing here.
00:34:17Well, I'm in trouble.
00:34:20But I'm afraid I can't tell you until you explain to me why you're here yourself.
00:34:24Why, I live here.
00:34:26Here in Limehouse?
00:34:28Yes.
00:34:30I suppose that does seem a little strange to you.
00:34:33But it's quite simple, really.
00:34:35You see, my guardian, who took me when I was a very little girl, is a high-cost Chinese.
00:34:40He lives here in Limehouse, so that he may be near the people he can help most.
00:34:47His own people.
00:34:49My guardian is Dr. Fu Manchu.
00:34:52Not Dr. Fu Manchu, the expert on oriental diseases.
00:34:54Yes.
00:34:55Oh, why, I know all about him.
00:34:58Oh.
00:34:59The whole world knows about him.
00:35:02He's the best and kindest man that ever lived.
00:35:05I'm in trouble, and I believe that Dr. Fu could help me.
00:35:11Oh, I'm sure he could.
00:35:16He's always very glad to help everyone.
00:35:19May I be of assistance?
00:35:21Oh.
00:35:23Uncle Fu, I want you to know Dr...
00:35:27Ah, Petrie. Jack Petrie.
00:35:30Dr. Petrie, my revered guardian, Dr. Fu Manchu.
00:35:35I am indeed very glad to know you, sir.
00:35:37Your presence honors our house.
00:35:41Uncle Fu, Dr. Petrie was just telling me that he's in some sort of trouble,
00:35:46and I told him to be awfully glad to help him.
00:35:48Nothing would delight me more than to be of service to Dr. Petrie.
00:35:54Well, I...
00:35:56I scarcely know whether I should bother you.
00:36:00Oh, please.
00:36:01Please tell him about it.
00:36:03Hush, little flower.
00:36:05If the Dr. Thiegancy had rather not trust me, I...
00:36:09Oh, no. Of course not.
00:36:11Ah.
00:36:13That is well.
00:36:15Will you come into my study?
00:36:19Thank you again.
00:36:22I'll say goodbye after we've had our little talk.
00:36:24I'll say goodbye after we've had our little talk.
00:36:25I'll say goodbye after we've had our little talk.
00:36:27We've had our little talk.
00:36:28We've had our little talk.
00:36:29I'll say goodbye after we've had our little talk.
00:36:30We've had our little questions.
00:36:31We've been listening.
00:36:32Say, Lu, you've been listening.
00:36:49Mm-mm.
00:36:52Mm-mm.
00:36:57Did you see the marvelous Englishman?
00:36:59Mm-mm.
00:37:02Orfei, Lu, I want my green dress and my gold slippers and those pearl drops for my ears.
00:37:10Mm-mm.
00:37:11Now run quickly.
00:37:12Go.
00:37:13Oh.
00:37:24You... you are in trouble, Dr. Petrie.
00:37:29Yes, I am.
00:37:31Tonight, my grandfather, General Petrie, was killed.
00:37:36Murdered?
00:37:37No.
00:37:38General Petrie?
00:37:40Murdered?
00:37:41Scott and Yard is on the case, and when an Oriental was suspected, a clue led to the gambling room below.
00:37:52The suspect was chased through these corridors and I became confused. That accounts for my presence in your ward's room.
00:37:59Your news shocks me.
00:38:01Thank you for your sympathy, Doctor.
00:38:02Later I may ask your assistance, but right at the present moment I think I'd better be trying to find my friend, Nalen Smith.
00:38:10Wait.
00:38:11It would not be safe for you to leave now.
00:38:14If you will sit down, I will send one of my servants to find your friend, Nalen Smith?
00:38:21Yes, yes.
00:38:22That's it.
00:38:23That's very good of you.
00:38:24Thank you, Doctor.
00:38:25Not at all.
00:38:26I am delighted to serve, Dr. Petrie.
00:38:31There is a stranger locked in the corridor.
00:38:35You are to give orders that he is to be found and brought here.
00:38:40And in the meantime, bring tea.
00:38:43Yes.
00:38:44Guest tea.
00:38:47With your knowledge of limehouse, Doctor, you'll be invaluable to us.
00:38:54Yes.
00:38:55My people are peculiar.
00:38:59And only an Oriental understands them.
00:39:05But I mean to act quickly before your Scotland Yard, friends, acts rashly.
00:39:12And I think I may safely promise to bring you face to face with a man who murdered your grandfather.
00:39:26An interesting relic from this tomb of Genghis Khan.
00:39:34Perhaps you do not know our Chinese ceremonial of guest tea.
00:39:53It is the drink we serve our friends just before they depart.
00:40:03Smith!
00:40:04Another moment and you would have been poisoned.
00:40:06But this is Dr. Fu Manchu.
00:40:07Yes.
00:40:08The insidious Dr. Fu Manchu.
00:40:09The murderer we are looking for.
00:40:10How do you know?
00:40:11Look there.
00:40:12The original blood-stained dragon.
00:40:13I congratulate you.
00:40:17I did not think Honorable Inspector would search for me in so obvious a place as Limehouse.
00:40:24You forget, Doctor.
00:40:25I've learned your Chinese proverb.
00:40:26If a wise man would hide from pool, let him stay in his bed.
00:40:31Being fools, they will credit him with the most distant hiding places.
00:40:38Again, I congratulate you, Inspector, for having followed my reasoning so perfectly.
00:40:45Oh, but, Smith, surely Dr. Fu Manchu would never...
00:40:46I tell you, this maniac has caused the death of a score of men.
00:40:48Fourteen!
00:40:49To be exact.
00:40:50Counting, General Fu Manchu.
00:40:51If a wise man would hide from pools, let him stay in his bed.
00:40:54Being fools, they will credit him with the most distant hiding places.
00:40:59Again, I congratulate you, Inspector, for having followed my reasoning so perfectly.
00:41:07Oh, but, Smith, surely Dr. Fu Manchu would never...
00:41:10I tell you, this maniac has caused the death of a score of men.
00:41:14Fourteen!
00:41:15To be exact.
00:41:16Counting, General Petrie.
00:41:19You killed him?
00:41:20No!
00:41:21No!
00:41:22Oh, they don't understand, because they don't know you.
00:41:27Oh, can't you see?
00:41:29Can't you see he's only jesting?
00:41:31I jest?
00:41:33First, ask them if the white devils who put that blood stain there were jesting.
00:41:39Ask them.
00:41:40If not, I shall continue to kill until the last stain is wiped out.
00:41:46Oh, no!
00:41:47No!
00:41:48Oh, I can't believe it.
00:41:50Can you believe, little fool?
00:41:52I hate your detestable white skin.
00:41:59Up with your hands, Doctor.
00:42:03Forgive my anger.
00:42:06Forgive me, too, for having underestimated you.
00:42:10To be caught by the great Nalen Smith is almost a compliment.
00:42:16At least, I've never underestimated you, Doctor.
00:42:19But now, you've killed your last man.
00:42:23Not quite my last.
00:42:25I'm counting on Dr. Petrie and his father to complete my work.
00:42:31You...
00:42:32Keep your gun on him.
00:42:37Keep your gun on him.
00:42:50Your wrist?
00:42:51Doctor?
00:42:52One question first.
00:42:55What would you do if I told you that your esteemed friend was no longer behind you?
00:43:02Oh.
00:43:03Oh.
00:43:04I should say, too old a trick, Doctor.
00:43:08Help, Smith!
00:43:09Help!
00:43:10Help!
00:43:13Help!
00:43:14Help!
00:43:15Help!
00:43:17Help!
00:43:19Harvest.
00:43:30I am his butcher's pronto and one for the first to meet again.
00:43:34I have many hiding places.
00:43:41Pardon me!
00:43:46insights
00:43:46He's gone, too!
00:43:47Trap door!
00:43:54We heard the shot, sir. You got him?
00:43:55Yes.
00:43:57That's the blind door. Open it.
00:43:59Very good. Gives a hand here, Vance.
00:44:01You're all right now.
00:44:04Oh, I'm frightened. Terribly frightened.
00:44:06Now, now, don't tremble like that. I won't let him hurt you.
00:44:10Take me away from here. Say you take me away.
00:44:13Of course we'll take you away. Of course we will.
00:44:15On the other side with an empty room, sir.
00:44:17Aren't afraid of that.
00:44:18Here, don't. Search this place from top to bottom.
00:44:20I'll block her.
00:44:21Put in a stragnet around the entire distance.
00:44:23We can't leave her here like this.
00:44:25I'm going to take her away someplace where she'll be safe from that fiend.
00:44:28Why, what are you about her, sir?
00:44:29She's one of Fu Manchu's gang.
00:44:32No, I tell you, I'm not.
00:44:34Of course she's not.
00:44:35Can't you see she has nothing to do with it?
00:44:36Don't worry.
00:44:38No harm will come to her.
00:44:43Weymouth.
00:44:45Yes, sir.
00:44:46I think we'll take her with us to headquarters and guard her until morning.
00:44:50And then she can go with us to Red Moat.
00:44:53Red Moat?
00:44:54Isn't that where you sent Sir John, sir?
00:44:56Exactly.
00:44:57And the girl will fit nicely into a little plan I've formed.
00:45:02Here.
00:45:03You will arrange this place in accordance with my orders.
00:45:04Yes, sir.
00:45:05You will arrange this place in accordance with my orders.
00:45:09Yes.
00:45:10Ah.
00:45:11Right?
00:45:12Yes.
00:45:13Yes.
00:45:14Yes.
00:45:15I'll arrange this place in accordance with my orders.
00:45:16Yes.
00:45:18Yes.
00:45:19Yes.
00:45:20Yes.
00:45:21Yes.
00:45:23Yes.
00:45:24Yes.
00:45:25Yes.
00:45:26Yes.
00:45:27Yes.
00:45:28Yes.
00:45:29Yes.
00:45:30I'll give you my orders.
00:45:35Ah, my boat.
00:45:43Well?
00:45:46They have taken the infantile girl and her clothing to Redmoat.
00:45:50Eh? Redmoat?
00:45:53Shall thy worm follow and kill?
00:45:56No, Horne. I am well pleased.
00:46:01Better for them they had a cobra in their midst than that girl.
00:46:14Here, Mr. Smith, is the detail report on Dr. Poon Anshu.
00:46:18I thank Your Excellency.
00:46:20What a tragedy that such a brilliant man should be criminally insane.
00:46:24We were shocked by the facts, Mr. Smith.
00:46:27But his intelligence makes his menace the greater.
00:46:31And we, as Chinese officials, are only too anxious that he should be brought to justice.
00:46:36I thank Your Excellency for your cooperation.
00:46:39I hope that you will count upon it at all times.
00:46:54Thank you for joining us.
00:46:56Let's see.
00:46:57Let's see.
00:46:58Let's see.
00:46:59Let's see.
00:47:00How do you understand?
00:47:02We will be at a moment.
00:47:04We will be present, Yeah!
00:47:05It is an episode of an hour before I take care of our work.
00:47:08We will see people who will move forward,
00:47:09and we will see you in the future.
00:47:11We will be at a moment.
00:47:12We will be satisfied with the fear and ant-sふling.
00:47:13Hey!
00:47:14We will see you at a moment.
00:47:16Very much ahead.
00:47:17It is a moment,
00:47:18very much ahead.
00:47:19We will see you.
00:47:20Quiet for this.
00:47:50Who named that unfortunate dog, Phyllis, anyway?
00:47:57I did.
00:47:58She looks rather like an old aunt of mine.
00:48:03Well, what is she? A bloodhound?
00:48:07My aunt? A bloodhound?
00:48:12No, the dog.
00:48:15Oh, oh, the dog.
00:48:17Oh, well, well, she is a bloodhound in spots.
00:48:20With a dash of newfoundland and what not.
00:48:33All right, Gibson. I saw the car from the window. You've met him in.
00:48:36Yes, Mr. John.
00:48:40Is it all right?
00:48:41Yes.
00:48:47Hello, Jack.
00:48:51Hello, Father.
00:48:54This is Miss Lea.
00:48:57Oh, delighted to see you, Miss Lea.
00:48:59It's very good of you to let me come, Sir John.
00:49:01Oh, not at all.
00:49:02Don't.
00:49:04You'll come with me. I'll show you around.
00:49:05Hello, Father.
00:49:10This is Miss Lear.
00:49:12Oh, delighted to see you, Miss Lear.
00:49:14It's very good of you to let me come, Sir John.
00:49:18Not at all.
00:49:20You'll come with me. I'll show you around.
00:49:28I say, isn't this a big pick?
00:49:31I thought you said on the phone that this girl was mixed up with that murderer.
00:49:34Exactly.
00:49:36Petrie, you're willing to take a risk in order to help me trap Fu Manchu.
00:49:40Well, you know I am.
00:49:41Very well.
00:49:42I'm convinced that girl is a creature of Fu Manchu's and I mean to use her.
00:49:47Now, this is my plan.
00:49:49Oh, I don't know what I would have done without you.
00:50:04I've made myself clear.
00:50:08Perfectly.
00:50:09You'll leave the details to me with the utmost confidence.
00:50:13Aye.
00:50:18I say, you're not leaving us, Inspector.
00:50:20Yes, I'm off for London.
00:50:24Goodbye, Sir.
00:50:26Good luck.
00:50:28Goodbye.
00:50:39I wish he hadn't gone.
00:50:40You might try and see if you can get the big chip on the radio, Sylvester.
00:50:54Yes.
00:50:55It'll be a comfort to be in touch at least once more with civilization.
00:50:57Dr. Fu Manchu, the murderer wanted by Scotland Yard, is still at large.
00:51:02Reports have been received that he has left London and is headed for the coast.
00:51:07Oh, my God.
00:51:07You've got to be in touch with the ship on the radio, Sylvester.
00:51:09Yes.
00:51:10It'll be a comfort to be in touch at least once more with civilization.
00:51:14Dr. Fu Manchu, the murderer wanted by Scotland Yard, is still at large.
00:51:19Reports have been received that he has left London and is headed for the coast.
00:51:26Oh, what is the matter?
00:51:33There's nothing the matter.
00:51:36Be quiet, Phyllis.
00:51:44Are you quite sure we're safe here?
00:51:46I never was surer.
00:51:49Why the old boys who built this place were used to standing in sieges.
00:51:53Why the sea is on Cleesides, and the front a twelve-foot wall with gates that a cat couldn't get through.
00:52:00There are two Scotland Yard men on guard night and day.
00:52:03So you see, my dear, we're as safe...
00:52:05Well, we're as safe as the Bank of England.
00:52:12I say, that's a good one.
00:52:14Only one of father's minds.
00:52:15Tis rather a ghastly thing.
00:52:17You see, my father makes a hobby of collecting all sorts of weird things.
00:52:21He's a bit of an antiquarian.
00:52:24Here's a book he's writing about his travels.
00:52:26Ah.
00:52:27Oh, hello, father.
00:52:28I was just telling Lear about your book.
00:52:30Oh.
00:52:31Well, it's nothing really, Miss Lear.
00:52:34Just a rough sketch, you know, and a few photographs.
00:52:40Oh.
00:52:41Oh.
00:52:41Dragon.
00:52:48Evidently, I am to be honored next.
00:52:53Well, who could have put it there?
00:53:02Oh.
00:53:03Oh, you don't mean...
00:53:05You don't think that I did it?
00:53:08Well, of course not.
00:53:10Well, someone must have slipped in while we were upstairs.
00:53:14Silvester.
00:53:26What on earth are you doing here?
00:53:28I was trying to get something cheerful on the radio when I...
00:53:50Oh!
00:53:51There's that horrid caterpillar again.
00:53:54It's your sherpa, sir.
00:54:10What's happened?
00:54:11It's that broken tree across the road, sir, when we drove down.
00:54:14A great big chink was hiding behind the edge with two others.
00:54:18You mean...
00:54:19Yes, sir.
00:54:20They knocked me out, took my hat and coat, and somebody else drove you through the guys.
00:54:24Who met you with here?
00:54:26In this house.
00:54:27Oh, I...
00:54:28I know it.
00:54:29I know it.
00:54:30Who turned out those lights?
00:54:33Look out, Father.
00:54:35Look out.
00:54:36Quick, somebody strike a light.
00:54:40You all right?
00:54:41Yes, sir.
00:54:42I'm all right, but look there.
00:54:43Good heavens.
00:54:44Missed me that time.
00:54:45Where?
00:54:46Where's Monsieur?
00:54:47Lear?
00:54:48Lear?
00:54:49Quick!
00:54:50Everybody!
00:54:51That fiend's gotta scatter and find us!
00:54:53Lear!
00:55:06Lear!
00:55:07Lear!
00:55:08Lear!
00:55:09Lear!
00:55:10Lear!
00:55:11Lear!
00:55:13Lear!
00:55:14Lear!
00:55:15Lear!
00:55:16Lear!
00:55:17Ler!
00:55:18No use, Father.
00:55:34We've searched the place in the cellar to the tower room and we can't find her.
00:55:37And you never will.
00:55:39I tell you, my boy, there's no question about it.
00:55:42The girl's in league with that Chinaman.
00:55:44I believe she is, sir.
00:55:45Oh, you're wrong.
00:55:46The both of you.
00:55:48All this fighting with shadows.
00:55:50I can only get my hands on him.
00:55:55Oh, Phyllis, stop.
00:55:59Dr. Fu Manchu, the notorious murderer, still at large, wanted by Scotland Yard.
00:56:10Phyllis, do you think I'll ever live to eat tomorrow's marmalade?
00:56:14Well, if you'll stay here with Sir John, sir, I'll join Wilkins at the gate.
00:56:22Right.
00:56:29Let's have Simpson bring us some coffee, Father.
00:56:31Well, I'm sorry, son, but he's gone.
00:56:36Gone?
00:56:37After what happened in the hall, the servants took the car and simply cleared out.
00:56:41You don't mean to say that we've only Sylvester and those Scotland Yard men left?
00:56:45Yes.
00:56:48Sir John, Wilkins has disappeared.
00:56:51What?
00:56:52It's true, he's gone.
00:56:53I can't find him anywhere.
00:56:58Well, I should say that called for a drink.
00:57:02You know, I don't think you quite realize how serious this is, sir.
00:57:09No, thank you.
00:57:10Jack, I'm no fool, Trent.
00:57:15I know I'm next on that Chinaman's list.
00:57:18After all, I went through the Boxer Rising and I've been through the Great War.
00:57:23And I'm not going to lose any sleep over this.
00:57:26Cheerio.
00:57:26Now, you fellas can sit up as long as you like.
00:57:32I'm going to have a nap now.
00:57:34Very good, sir.
00:57:36You better stay here, though, where Dr. Petri can keep his eye on you.
00:57:39I'm going to call Scotland Yard.
00:57:46Exchange.
00:57:49Exchange.
00:57:54Exchange.
00:57:55What's up?
00:57:56The wires have been cut.
00:57:58What?
00:58:00Please, please, help, help, help, help.
00:58:05What's that?
00:58:06Help, help, help.
00:58:17Oh.
00:58:18Oh, so it's you, is it?
00:58:22Is it?
00:58:23Yes, I suppose it is.
00:58:28All that's left of me.
00:58:31Well, what happened?
00:58:34Well, I was up on the landing and I thought I heard someone.
00:58:38So I tried to get behind the armor to hide.
00:58:42And as I backed into it, it sprang at me.
00:58:45And when I, I think I, I fell down the stairs.
00:58:56Yes, I did.
00:58:58Well, try and keep quiet for a bit with you, Sylvester.
00:59:01I'm trying to get a nap.
00:59:03I'm trying to get a nap.
00:59:05Say, just keep an eye on your father, will you, sir?
00:59:06I want to have another look around.
00:59:08Right-o.
00:59:09And as for you, Sylvester, will you go somewhere and go to sleep?
00:59:12Oh.
00:59:15Did you say sleep?
00:59:18Yes, sleep.
00:59:20All right.
00:59:21All right.
00:59:35Hello.
00:59:37Father.
00:59:39Father.
00:59:39Father.
00:59:39Father.
00:59:50Dr. Fu Manchu, the notorious murderer, Bill Adlarge, wanted by Scotland Yard.
01:00:20Mia!
01:00:50Miss! Let me go! Father! Miss, where's my father?
01:01:02Oh, it's all right, Jack. I'm quite all right. This was Smith's plan, and it worked.
01:01:08Trent's got to get out. Come on. Come on.
01:01:17Hold on.
01:01:20She's been hypnotized, and doesn't know what she's doing. Let her go. Let her go.
01:01:31She may lead us, that whole manchu.
01:01:40Mia!
01:01:41Sir John, you sit in that chair.
01:01:54Trent, don't take your eyes off him for a moment.
01:01:58Good afternoon.
01:02:00Dr. Jack, you come with me.
01:02:05Dr. Jack, you come with me.
01:02:09Amen.
01:02:39Amen.
01:02:43Amen.
01:02:50Amen.
01:02:55It's all right, dear. You're safe. Quite safe.
01:03:02Oh. Something terrible happened.
01:03:05You don't remember that you tried to kill my father?
01:03:09Oh, no. No, it isn't true.
01:03:13Listen, darling. Didn't you know that Fu Manchu has the power to make you do anything he wishes?
01:03:19Oh, you mean without my knowing?
01:03:23Yes.
01:03:25Oh, and he made me try to kill your father.
01:03:31Oh, no. Don't touch me. You mustn't.
01:03:36Oh, I must go away from here.
01:03:39He might make me hurt you.
01:03:41Oh, please, let me go.
01:03:43Listen, darling. Listen.
01:03:45He had that power over you, but he never can have it again.
01:03:49Because now that you know, we can fight it together.
01:03:54No. No. I'm afraid. Horribly afraid.
01:04:00Oh, I feel weak when I think of him.
01:04:03I hope you'll never meet him again.
01:04:06But if you do, and he tries to get you into his power, I want you to fight against him.
01:04:12You must remember I love you.
01:04:17And fight him.
01:04:19Oh, I will, Dr. Jack. I will.
01:04:25He got away. There's any secret passage in this place.
01:04:28No. Why, yes.
01:04:29There's an old staircase leading down from the tower room into my father's library.
01:04:39The library. Come here.
01:04:41Come here.
01:04:42Come here.
01:04:43Trent. Trent. Trent.
01:04:45Trent.
01:04:46Trent.
01:04:47Come here.
01:04:48There's an old staircase leading down from the tower room into my father's library.
01:04:51The library. Come here.
01:04:55Oh, oh.
01:04:57Oh, oh, oh.
01:04:58I want to go.
01:04:59You can't go.
01:05:00Come here.
01:05:01I want to go there.
01:05:02Now, I'll go.
01:05:03Well...!
01:05:04You are right.
01:05:05What?
01:05:06You are.
01:05:08I want to go.
01:05:09I want to go.
01:05:10Don't you care?
01:05:11You're right.
01:05:12Don't you care?
01:05:13You're right.
01:05:14I want to go.
01:05:15You're right.
01:05:16I want to go.
01:05:17You're right.
01:05:18I want to go.
01:05:19Oh, oh, oh.
01:05:21They must have taken you down those stairs.
01:05:23I'll go.
01:05:24See if you can do anything for Trench.
01:05:27French!
01:05:28French!
01:05:30French!
01:05:31What happened?
01:05:39Father!
01:05:40Father!
01:05:42He's dead!
01:05:45Oh!
01:05:47Oh, it still makes you laugh!
01:05:49No!
01:05:50No!
01:06:15A monument to your Honourable Father.
01:06:19But for you is reserved a higher place.
01:06:23Your death means the gilding of the last scale
01:06:28and the completion of my work.
01:06:31Oh!
01:06:32Oh, no!
01:06:33Oh, no!
01:06:34No!
01:06:35You do not wish me to kill him?
01:06:38Very well.
01:06:39I shall not kill him, little flower.
01:06:43You shall kill him yourself.
01:06:49Oh!
01:06:51Oh!
01:06:52Oh!
01:06:53Oh!
01:06:54Oh!
01:06:55Oh!
01:06:56Oh!
01:06:57Oh!
01:06:58Oh!
01:06:59Oh!
01:07:00Oh!
01:07:01Oh!
01:07:02Oh!
01:07:04Oh!
01:07:05Oh!
01:07:06Oh!
01:07:07Look at me, Lea!
01:07:08Look!
01:07:09Oh!
01:07:10Do you hear me, Leah?
01:07:32I hear you, Master.
01:07:35Julia! Julia!
01:07:36You are my slave.
01:07:41I am your slave.
01:07:43No, no, Leah!
01:07:45You are my slave.
01:07:49I am fighting.
01:07:51I am fighting, Dr. Jack.
01:08:06Oh, you have no power over me.
01:08:09I am not afraid.
01:08:12I am not afraid.
01:08:13I congratulate you, and you too, Doctor, for your prodigious mental victory.
01:08:22You can't make me kill him.
01:08:25That is as you like, my child, but as for your sweetheart, I think he would rather die by your hand than to suffer the death of a thousand deaths.
01:08:37Here is proof that I am prepared for you.
01:08:40Come.
01:08:41Come.
01:08:41Come.
01:08:42Come.
01:08:43Come.
01:08:44Come.
01:08:45Come.
01:08:46Come.
01:08:47Look for yourself.
01:08:48Come.
01:08:49Come.
01:08:50Come.
01:08:51Come.
01:08:52Come.

01:09:11Come.
01:09:12Come.
01:09:13Come.
01:09:14Come.
01:09:15Come.
01:09:16An especially prepared quicklime.
01:09:24Most advantageous when you do not wish to lead a trade.
01:09:30You'll pay for this when Smith gets you.
01:09:33And he will, too.
01:09:35Don't ever doubt that.
01:09:37He will.
01:09:38I humbly apologize.
01:09:40I'm afraid my somewhat weird and oriental methods may have misled your occidental mind into believing that this is nothing but a gigantic melodrama in which the detective's arrival at the last moment produces the happy ending.
01:10:06Don't deny it. I can see by your face it is so.
01:10:20Permit me to settle that idea once and for all.
01:10:28Smith.
01:10:30Exactly.
01:10:36As you see, you can scarcely expect the usual ending.
01:10:45You...
01:10:47You...
01:10:47There, yourself.
01:10:49I ask you, Dr. Petrie, what Western mind could have conceived this little pleasantry of mine?
01:11:02For years I raised this girl and planned that she should fall in love with you and you with her.
01:11:10Then I caused you to meet romantically in the fog.
01:11:18And now it is my plan that she should kill you.
01:11:23The idea of allowing a girl to kill her lover to save him from a worse death is rather intriguing.
01:11:32Intriguing, is it not?
01:11:42And to prove to you that I have the soul of romance, I shall allow you a few delicious moments of farewell.
01:11:51But I should not advise your attempting to escape, nor loose your bonds, as I shall be on guard out there.
01:12:07I have forgotten.
01:12:08Ah.
01:12:09I had forgotten.
01:12:10The scene calls for a little soft music.
01:12:14Yes, yes, yes.
01:12:15And to make it quite perfect...
01:12:17Darkness.
01:12:18Old magic for romance.
01:12:19Yes.
01:12:20And...
01:12:21And...
01:12:22To...
01:12:23I'll...
01:12:24Look at the...
01:12:25Soft music.
01:12:26Soft music.
01:12:27Yes.
01:12:28Yes.
01:12:29And to make it quite perfect...
01:12:34Darkness.
01:12:35Old magic...
01:12:36Or romance.
01:12:37Yes...
01:12:38Yes.
01:12:39How long...
01:12:40How long...
01:12:43How long will you give us?
01:12:48We're unfortunately lacking in time, people.
01:12:52Oh, Moon.
01:12:54Do you see that moonbeam crawling along the wall?
01:13:00It shall be your clock.
01:13:03You mean?
01:13:04I mean, when the moonbeam touches the dragon,
01:13:10I shall return.
01:13:27Believe me, honorable inspector,
01:13:30I regret that our contest is ended.
01:13:34Yours is the first intellect
01:13:37that I have really respected since I left China.
01:13:42Hmm.
01:13:43It is too bad that your affection for Petrie
01:13:46so overcame your judgment
01:13:48that you forgot that Red Moat is an historic house
01:13:52and that anyone might get a plan of it at the museum.
01:13:56Hmm?
01:13:58You see, it is little things like that
01:14:01which prove my mind to be superior to yours.
01:14:13Your efficient subordinates are searching for you diligently.
01:14:18Perhaps it would interest you to watch.
01:14:21Hmm?
01:14:37Hmm.
01:14:38It is too bad their efforts should be so useless.
01:14:41I am sorry if the ropes are tight,
01:14:46but I assure you they shall not trouble you for long.
01:14:52Within an hour my work shall be completed here
01:14:55and I shall be on my way to China.
01:14:58And as a matter of courtesy,
01:15:01so that no one will know that I was the victor
01:15:04and you the vanquist,
01:15:07I assure you that your body,
01:15:10if it is found,
01:15:12will be quite unrecognizable.
01:15:16No.
01:15:18Don't cry.
01:15:19If there is any memory left me
01:15:23out there,
01:15:25I want it to be of your smile.
01:15:35I will try to smile.
01:15:46I regret to interrupt.
01:15:50The time has come
01:16:17my face has come

01:17:16No, that's the cup.
01:17:35Hold up!
01:17:46Yes, see, Dr. Petrich, the drink we serve our friends just before they depart.
01:18:01You have not kept your word, little flower. In order to poison me, you have lost your chance to save your sweetheart from death.
01:18:25Oh, no! No, no!
01:18:29Too late. You know, I always keep my word.
01:18:36Quick, I think Inspector Smith would enjoy this. Bring him.
01:18:46Oh, no! Please, please!
01:18:49Too late. Too late.
01:18:52Oh, no! You can't be so cruel!
01:19:00Release him, or keep his hands tied.
01:19:07You're not out of witness many executions, Inspector, but I think this one will interest you, eh?
01:19:14King!
01:19:18Smith!
01:19:19You see, Dr. Fool, you did overlook something.
01:19:22You forgot that Fay Lu loved that girl.
01:19:29Police! Police!
01:19:33See, there's two here!
01:19:35Come on up, then.
01:19:38You're a blundering fool!
01:19:40Where are you?
01:19:41Please!
01:19:42Are you all right, Chief?
01:19:43All right, I...
01:19:57Forgive me.
01:19:58Soon, I shall be with my ancestors.
01:19:59Soon, I shall be with my ancestors.
01:20:01Soon, I shall be with my ancestors.
01:20:05In regards to my ancestors, I only regret that I still lack one life to complete my masterpiece.
01:20:34After all, Inspector, our story ends in the usual way.
01:21:03I'll be with you, Viena.
01:21:05I'll be with you, Viena.
