We talk in hushed tones, we give them the sideways glance, and we keep our families away from them. They are the Ex-addicts, but while they have moved on, we continue to stay addicted!
Addicted to our biases, addicted to our fear of the term ‘drugs’, addicted to our judgment of someone who has used. So much, so that we refuse to see and accept that our biases become a new hurdle for the one who has already fought, strived and successfully won a painful battle.
So maybe it is time for us to look past that one battle of theirs, and see them for everything else that they are and always were… because their struggle is not their identity.
