One World Trade Center is now America's tallest building.

For roughly 12 years, crews in New York City have been working to replace the original World Trade Center which was destroyed on September 11th 2001.

On May 10th 2013, a 408-foot tall spire was placed on top of the new One World Trade Center with the help of a crane.

Comprised of 18 pieces, the steeple makes the total height of the tower 1,776 feet and if that number sounds familiar, it is because America signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It is also now the tallest building in the USA and in the entire Western Hemisphere.

A large group of cheering onlookers watched as the final piece of the tower was installed on top. A port authority representative states “This really is a symbolic moment because this building really represents the resiliency of this country. These people, the thousand men and women who have worked here tirelessly, really as a tribute for the people that perished on 9/11 right on this site.”
