Prince Harry kicks off his U.S. visit in Washington, D.C.

STORY: Prince Harry was a special guest at a tea reception hosted by US First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Thursday (May 9) to honour American military mothers.

The Prince walked into a hall room packed with mothers and their young children to wild cheers, as the First Lady expressed her joy at having him there.

"Well, it is my honour to welcome Prince Harry to the White House today. As you all might know, Prince Harry is a Captain in the Army Air Corps in the British Armed Forces (crowd applauding and cheering)," she said.

Prince Harry had opened his week-long tour of the United States with a stop at a photographic exhibition of land mine clearance efforts co-ordinated by the HALO Trust, a charitable organisation dedicated to cleansing war zones of mines and other explosives.
