Afghan president urges Taliban to fight enemies

Tension at the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan after an Afghan border policeman is killed in a clash on Wednesday.

Mohammad Qasim was killed while two Pakistani soldiers were wounded in the clash on the eastern Afghanistan border.

In the capital Kabul on Saturday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai called on the Taliban to fight Afghanistan's enemies - widely seen as a swipe against Pakistan.

(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) AFGHAN PRESIDENT, HAMID KARZAI, SAYING:

"Instead of destroying their own country, they (Taliban) should turn their weapon against where plots are made against Afghanistan's prosperity and should stand with this young man Mohammad Qasim who was martyred and defend their soil."

Relations between the two countries have been testy since Pakistan was formed in 1947, with Afghanistan never officially accepting the border between them.
