Eight killed in suspected suicide blast in Pakistan

Blood on the streets - a bomb in the Pakistani city of Peshawar kills eight people, including the son of an influential Afghan cleric.

More than 45 were wounded in the suspected suicide attack, which appeared to be aimed at the convoy of a city official, police said.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) POLICE SUPERINTENDENT MOHAMMAD FAISAL, SAYING:

"According to our information so far, a motorcycle had been prepared with explosives, and the suicide bomber exploded that motorcycle. There were around five or six kilogrammes of explosive material on that bike."

Many of those killed and wounded were reportedly waiting for a bus.

Among the dead was Qari Hilal, the son of prominent religious leader Qazi Amin Waqad - a member of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, which is trying to draw the Afghan Taliban into peace talks.

A doctor at the hospital where the casualties were taken said two of the dead were Afghan refugees.
