ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: The first student protest since newly appointed Education Minister Carolina Schmit assumed the position ended with arrests and students clashing with police who used a water cannon truck to disperse demonstrators on Thursday (April 25).

The demonstration was led by private university students with the backing of other student groups and was also joined by secondary students, workers groups and others backing the students' calls for deep education reforms.

The student group was denied permission from the city to march from the University of Santiago to the Ministry of Education where they had planned to deliver a letter to the new education minister saying the answer they are looking for was not changing ministers, but instead making fundamental changes to the education system students say is profit driven.

Several arrests were made during the violent outbreak.
