Placebo Sugar Pills Cause Birth Control Recall

Placebo sugar bills cause a birth control recall.

A Canadian drug distributor is recalling a bad batch of Alysena-28 birth control pills.

Some packets that have been on sale since December 2012 have an extra week of placebo pills in them, potentially reducing their effectiveness.

The contraceptives made it to the shelves in almost all Canadian provinces.

The company alerted retailers and wholesalers last week but not individual consumers.

Since the recall was initiated several druggists and doctors’ offices have taken it upon themselves to personally contact at-risk patients.

One outlet is offering free pregnancy tests and morning after pills to its affected customers.

A university student said when she heard the news, "I felt like I was going to throw up to be quite honest…you just know that something could go horribly wrong very quickly."

Last year Pfizer also recalled birth control pills because of a packaging mishap. A total of 28 lots of brand name and generic drugs were found to be either over or under the required amount of active tablets.
