Uruguay legalises gay marriage

Politicians in Uruguay have voted to legalise gay marriage.

The bill received the backing of 71 of the 92 members of the Chamber of Deputies present.

Uruguay is the third country in the Americas after Canada and Argentina to make marriage adoption and other family rights available to homosexuals.

In all 12 nations around the world have now taken this step.
