THE HERMIT KINGS - APPALACHIA
PRESENTED BY AMANDA MUIRHEAD
Think of post-folk outfit The Hermit Kings (based in Asheville, N.C.) as the Ocean's Eleven of bands. The group formed in the winter of 2010/2011 when singer-songwriter Zaq Suarez recruited a number of players from existing local bands for a brilliantly-masterminded casino heist musical experiment. Drummer Zack Hayes (Doc Aquatic) was tapped for his beat-oriented playing. Bassist Zach Dier (who also sings a deft harmony) is known for his grooving, always-in-the-pocket playing, which keeps the band grounded and smooth. Front man Zaq (yes, you counted right: there are thee Zaq/ck/chs), grafted genres, fused influences and explored a range of sounds, all (un)mad-scientist-like. The result is the Hermit Kings' debut, The Ghost of Galapagos. Offerings range from the ragtime-inspired "Yankee Whalers" to the soulful "A Day at the Races." As Mountain Xpress says, "This is a song cycle that whispers and screams, tiptoes and stomps, waltzes and slam dances. This is songwriting that doesn't shy away from blood and guts, or the dark, or bad dreams. Nor does it fear tender emotion or human frailty. And, as such, the songs are (like the album title suggests) haunted and strange."
