STORY: The streets of Chile's capital, Santiago, resembled a war zone in the early hours of Saturday as demonstrators clashed with police through the night after marking the "Day of the Young Combatant".

Protesters launched missiles at police and set fire to armored police vehicles using molotov cocktails, transforming some streets into what resembled a fiery inferno.

Police responded with tear gas and deployed water cannon in a bid to disperse the protesters.

Dozens of students were detained in the clashes which began on Friday afternoon.

A number of social organizations in Chile recognize March 29 as the "Day of the Young Combatant" in memory of two young brothers, Rafael and Eduardo Vergara Toledo, who were killed by police in a 1985 demonstration against the 1973-1990 Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.

Violent street protests are common occurrence in Chile.
