Catholics mark Holy Saturday in Jerusalem

Hundreds of Catholic Christians gathered at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to mark Holy Saturday (March 30), which commemorates the day that Jesus Christ's body lay in the tomb after his crucifixion.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Foad Twal led a ceremony, where candles were lit to symbolise Jesus' victory over death.

The annual service attracts Christians from all over the world.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is believed by Christians to be the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

Holy Week culminates in Easter Sunday, when Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead, on the third day after his crucifixion.
