Air Force One, the American presidential plane, touches down in Tel Aviv.

It's Obama's first official visit to Israel as president, and his three day trip will see meetings with both Israeli and Palestinian leadership.

Obama was greeted by Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He will hold lengthy talks with Netanyahu later in the day, with the two set to hold a news conference Wednesday evening.

Obama offered firm U.S. commitment to the Israeli state.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA, SAYING:

"As I begin my second term as president, Israel is the first stop on my first foreign trip. This is no accident. Across the region, the winds of change bring both promise and peril. So, I see this visit as an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bond between our nations, to restate America's unwavering commitment to Israel's security and to speak directly to the people of Israel and to your neighbours."
