According to a new study, men and women perceive colors differently.
Women are better at differentiating between subtle color distinctions and men are more attuned to noticing movement in their field of vision.
Researchers from the City University of New York in Brooklyn tested subjects’ visual acuity using both flickering light and dark bars contrasted on a computer screen, and color spectrums with subtle gradients.
Men had a visual advantage over women when the flickering bars became narrower and harder to see, while women were able to see more shades of yellow in the middle of the color spectrum between yellow and green.
Also the color that women see as orange, looks slightly more yellow to men, and when women see green, it looks more like blue-green to men.
One theory about the cause of the differences between the genders is that our ancestors in hunter gatherer societies adapted so that men had to perceive far away moving objects, and women needed to be able to see the subtle differences in color when looking for edible plants.
Another study showed that men and women focus their gaze differently during conversation, while men focus on the person’s mouth, women’s sight usually goes from looking at the speaker’s body to their eyes.
