Chuck Hagel confirmed as new US defence secretary

The US Senate has finally confirmed Chuck Hagel as new secretary of defence after a long and bitter battle over his nomination. It was the closest ever vote to approve a defence secretary at 58-41.Republicans had previously raised concerns over comments Hagel made in a 2008 book about the influence of the 'Jewish lobby' on Capitol Hill and claimed he had a weak stance on Iran.
