Americans Spend Billions of Hours Stuck in Traffic

A study reveals that traffic jams are costing American billions of hours and dollars.

Traffic jams are something that most people despise.

A new study conducted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute gives us another reason to hate crowded roadways

The research found that the extra time needed to allow for road congestion cost Americans $121 billion in time and gas in 2011. To break it down, on average, each individual driver shelled out an extra $818 to just sit in traffic for that one year. Time measured out to be 5.5 billion hours spent just sitting in a line of never-ending cars.

The financial cost had increased one billion dollars from 2010. In 2011, the number of gallons wasted for traffic jams amounted to 2.9 billion.

56 billion pounds of pollution is attributed to traffic congestion which equates to approximately 380 pounds per driver. The report named the cities worst for traffic jams, many of which are repeat offenders.

Washington D.C. ranks in at number one. Some of the other cities on the list are San Francisco-Oakland, Boston, Los Angeles, , and New York-Newark.

Traffic experts hope the findings will prompt urban areas to seek solutions.
