  • 11 years ago
Timeflies is an American music duo formed in October 2010 consisting of the group's producer Rob Resnick and vocalist Cal Shapiro. The two previously performed together in the Tufts University funk band, The Ride.

Early Life;
Cal grew up in Mamaroneck, New York, and every summer from ages 8 to 18, he attended Camps Kenwood and Evergreen. He was particularly fond of the camps music festival, Hollowpalooza, which took place in the middle of every summer.

History;
Though they got their start in Boston, Cal and Rez are originally from New York and New Jersey, respectively, and are currently living in Brooklyn. Using elements of pop, electro, dubstep and rock, Timeflies aims to escape genre limitations to create expressive music.
In late September 2011, Timeflies released their debut album, The Scotch Tape, which proved to be a huge success. Only 24 hours after its release, the album soared to #8 on the iTunes overall chart and #2 on the iTunes Pop chart. Dubbed “musical masterminds” by Vanity Fair, Cal and Rez undoubtedly have a bright future in the industry.
Every Tuesday, the guys make a video for their fans. “Timeflies Tuesday” has been a great way for the fans to get a look into what’s going on in the world of Timeflies, and for Cal and Rez to get a quick break from playing concerts at colleges and venues across the country, growing their fan base and spreading their music.Timeflies performs regularly at colleges and venues across the US.
Musical style and influences.
Resnick got an early start in production after building a Pro Tools studio in his basement for his high school bands, Inevitable and After Tonight. At Tufts, Rob majored in music and philosophy. During sophomore year, Rez got his start using audio production such as Reason, Digital Performer and Ableton. During this time, Resnick DJd regularly, and played drums for the Ride, a blues/funk/hip-hop band noted for their ability to cross musical genres. He cites Pretty Lights, Dr. Luke and Xaphoon Jones as major influences.
Cal has been singing and free styling since he was a teenager, and earned his college degree at Tufts University, majoring in Music and Entrepreneurship. In his sophomore year, upon joining The Ride, Cal fell in love with performing. Cal later teamed up with The Ride’s drummer, Resnick, to form Timeflies. Cal’s musical influences include Robert Johnson, Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters, and his favorite, Big L. He has become well known for his love for scotch, hence their first album, "The Scotch Tape."
