Bolshoi ballet director released from hospital

The artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Filin, leaves hospital on Monday.

Forty-two-year-old Filin has been there for almost two weeks after a masked assailant attacked him on his way home from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, splashing acid over his face and threatening his eyesight.

Speaking to journalists before leaving the hospital to continue treatment at a clinic in Germany, Filin said that he was feeling energetic and healthy.

Earlier on Sunday, Filin was quoted as saying he knew who was behind the attack.

He did not give any names but made clear he linked the case to his job.

Filin had been one of the most talked about figures in Russia as head of the ballet for nearly two years when he was assaulted.

He said the attack followed repeated threats and may have been motivated by competition or resentment.

Filin's job gave him power to make or break careers at the theatre notorious for its rivalry and intrigue.

After four eye surgeries, doctors say Filin may retain some sight in both eyes.
