Patriot surface-to-air missile components were unloaded at the Turkish port of Iskenderun on Tuesday (January 22) as part of the Dutch missile deployment to Incirlik Air Base.

Netherlands shipped out the Patriots as part of a NATO operation to bolster Turkey's defence against a threat of air attacks from Syria. More than 130 containers were brought to Turkey with the Gibraltar ship called 'Louise Russ'.

The Netherlands, Germany and the United States are each sending two Patriot missile batteries and up to 400 troops to Turkey after Ankara asked for NATO's help.

The Patriot batteries are expected to be fully functional by the beginning of February.
