Chicago Man Sentenced To 14 Years For Conspiracy

The U.S. Department of Justice announced a Pakistani-born Chicago businessman was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Thursday (January 17) for conspiracy.
Appearing in a Chicago courtroom before Federal Judge Harry Leinenweber, 52-year-oldTahawwur Rana was sentenced: "for conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist plot in Denmark and providing material support to Lashkar e Tayyiba, a terrorist organization operating in Pakistan," according to a news release from the Justice Department.
Rana, a Canadian citizen, was to serve 14 years in prison plus five years of supervised release, the statement said.
In June 2011, a jury had found Rana guilty of providing support to an Islamic militant group responsible for the 2008 assault on Mumbai but not guilty of taking part in the attack.
In a mixed verdict, the jury also found Rana, 50, a former Pakistan Army doctor with Canadian citizenship, guilty of conspiring to attack a Danish newspaper, a plot hatched by the militant group but never carried out.
In the trial, held in U.S. federal court in Chicago, the key witness -- Rana's childhood friend, David Headley -- implicated Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI, in the Mumbai attack which killed 166 people.
Headley admitted scouting targets for the Mumbai attackers sent by Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant group behind both plots and designated by the U.S. State Department a terrorist organization.
