The December 16th incident sparked massive and violent protests across India with demonstrators calling for swift action against the suspects.

The victim, a medical student, sustained such severe internal injuries that she was moved to a hospital in Singapore from Delhi for further treatment.

"The medical decision to shift her to Singapore followed consultations between the medical, ah, the medical team treating her in Delhi, with the surgeons and physicians in Singapore. So they must have come to a conclusion about the facilities available and as to how those facilities would provide the best possible medical treatment to her."

Family members will accompany the victim's body on a charted flight from Singapore to India later Saturday afternoon.

Funeral arrangements are still being determined.
