Four people are hospitalized after a dog vomits in a veterinary clinic.

Recently, in a veterinarian clinic in Colorado, a dog died while four people became extremely ill. According to the Eagle River Fire Protection District, the affected people had been at the clinic when the dog vomited after ingesting a toxic chemical. It is believed that the pet had swallowed rat poison before arriving at the clinic.

When the dog got sick and vomited, toxic fumes were released into the air, causing three people to suffer from respiratory problems. They were all sent to the hospital along with a fourth soul as a precaution.

Officials believe the chemical involved was zinc phosphide.

Zinc phosphide is an occupational hazard for veterinary workers. When dogs swallow the chemical, it contacts stomach acid, creating phosphine gas, which is colorless and flammable.

When the animals vomit, this gas is released into the air and it can be toxic to heart, liver, kidney and lungs.
