My name is Wade Coye from the Coye Law Firm, and I wanted to talk to you about the recent outbreak of meningitis. Over a dozen people have died so far from this epidemic, and the Center for Disease Control stated that over 100 people have already been infected, and warned that the number will likely rise.

Fungal meningitis is very rare, and the cause of the outbreak was linked to an epidural-steroid injection the patients were receiving to treat chronic back and neck pain.
It was discovered that the pharmaceutical company, the New England Compounding Center, had traces of the fungi in their facilities. Fungal spores are in the air all around us, and they don't cause harm when they are inhaled. But if injected, the fungus invades small blood vessels and can cause them to clot or bleed, which can lead to stroke-like symptoms. There is little federal oversight of drug safety and quality at compounding pharmacies compared to big drug manufacturers, and there was clearly a violation in their safety procedures.

While there has already been a nationwide recall of a wide range of their products, 23 states have already been identified as receiving the contaminated vials, including the state of Florida. Pain clinics in Orlando, Ocala, Miami, Palm Beach, and Pensacola were found to have had the contaminated injections.

Meningitis is not something you should take lightly. If you or a loved one has received an epidural-steroid injection within the last 5 weeks and has developed symptoms related to meningitis, you are at risk. If you experience any symptoms, contact your medical provider immediately, as it could be fatal.

Getting the medical care you need should not be delayed.
