"I've been waiting a long time to do a movie musical, never did I dream this one would come at just the perfect time and I actually rang Cameron and I think I spoke to Tom Hooper before he even signed for the project so I really wanted to do it."

Mackintosh joked that Jackman was too young to take a part in the 1985 stage production.

SOUNDBITE: Cameron Mackintosh, producer, saying (English):

"Hugh was too young to play it 25 years ago, I had to wait until he grew up, he wasn't old enough."

Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert, who is played by Russell Crowe.

This film version of the stage musical also stars Hollywood actresses Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.
