Despite billions of dollars in aid and dramatic progress, Afghanistan is still one of the worst places in the world to give birth with one in 32 women dying as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. Over the past decade aid agencies have been training midwives who are helping battle the grim statistics, but many fear funding might fall away once NATO troops pull out of the country in 2014.
