Australia went into the final day with a narrow lead thanks to Michael Clarke scoring a brilliant unbeaten double century and Ed Cowan hitting 100 for the first time. That was in response to South Africa's 450 which was built upon centuries by Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis but despite the best efforts of the home team, the game ended in a draw.

A century for Michael Hussey and Clarke closing on 259 not out put Australia in the dominant position before South Africa showed their resilience to bat out the rest of the day. Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers blunted Australia's efforts to ensure the series remains level heading to Adelaide, the venue for the second Test.
