FBI agents searched the home of Paula Broadwell, the woman at the center of the scandal involving former CIA Director David Petraeus, on Monday (November 12). A senior law enforcement official told NBC News that the search of Broadwell's home in Charlotte, North Carolina was consensual.
Petraeus resigned as head of the CIA on Friday (November 9), after an FBI investigation uncovered an extramarital affair with Broadwell. The investigation began when Jill Kelley, a long-time friend of the Petraeus family, complained to the FBI that Broadwell had sent her threatening emails, warning her to stay away from Petraeus.
Meanwhile, a senior defense official has said under condition of anonymity that General John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, is also under investigation for alleged inappropriate communication with Kelley, the very same woman who sparked the investigation into Broadwell and Petraeus.
The U.S. official said the FBI uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of communications, mostly emails spanning from 2010 to 2012, between Allen and Kelley.
It is still unknown if the documents reveal the disclosure of classified information. The U.S. defense official said that the concern only lies with "innappropriate communications."
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said that he asked that Allen's nomination to be Commander of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe be delayed and added that President Barack Obama agreed.
