Soccer Team in Greece Sponsored By Brothels

A cash-struggling Greek soccer team is saved by a brothel.

An amateur soccer team from the town of Larissa in central Greece has pink warm up jerseys advertising their sponsorship from local brothels.

Prostitution is legal in Greece, but the soccer team’s sponsorship from Villa Erotica and Soula's House of History is still quite controversial. Greece is in a recession and while facing economic hardship, sports teams are also feeling the pinch. The government-funding cuts have created dire financial straits for the country’s sports leagues.

The team has been without a sponsor for the past three years, and is suffering financially.

When interviewed for a radio show the team’s president defended the sponsor saying that they are a legitimate business worth some two million euros, and that the team would wear the jerseys advertising the businesses for the whole season.

Another team has taken sponsorship from a local funeral home.

What do you think? How much discretion should sports teams use when signing sponsors?
