Protestors clash with police in Madrid

Demonstrations turned violent in Madrid Tuesday night as protesters gathered to denounce new austerity measures.

Thousands of peple gathered earlier in the day and marched toward the parliament building-- by nightfall protesters were clashing with police.

More than 1500 police were deployed to handle the demonstration.

Wearing plain street clothes, tackled one demonstrator to the ground before dragging him off to a van.

Local media said at least 22 demonstrators were detained... 28 others were injured.

Later this week, the government is expected to set a new timetable for economic reforms as an attempt to pre-empt EU aid conditions.

Spain is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis as concerns grow that the government cant control its finances. One in four people in Spain is currently unemployed.
