More than twenty fighters linked to al-Qaeda have been killed in battles with Yemeni forces in the south.

The army has been ramping up its operations with the backing of the US. The military offensive began earlier this month and aims to regain control of the southern Abyan province.

The city of Jaar has been held by Ansar al-Sharia, a group founded by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

More than 350 people, including 250 fighters and 50 soldiers, are believed to have been killed since the operation began.
