UN approves Syria ceasefire monitors

The first group of 30 United Nations monitors is expected to arrive in Syria shortly, after the security council unanimously approved their mission.

Their role will be to check on the ceasefire as part of the peace plan put forward by UN envoy Kofi Annan.

The fighting was supposed to stop last Thursday - but activists have reported more violence and more killing.

Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from the UN headquarters in New York City.
