Mexico's underwater caves face pollution risk

The country's incredible cave-like sinkholes, once revered as gateways to the underworld by the Mayans, may be forced to close its passages because of pollution associated with the boomin tourism industry and poor water treatement facilities.

The associated wastage is endangering the extensive network of underground aquifers and underground rivers which are the soul source of fresh water for the Yucatan peninsula.

Environmentalists fear that if the government does not plan ahead, this wonder may be lost forever.
