Amateur video posted on a social media website appears to show shelling on the central Syrian city of Rastan.

The video, which cannot be independently verified by Reuters, shows smoke rising over a city neighbourhood. A man's voice says "Allahu akbar" (God is Greatest), as a hand holds up a card reading the city name.

Another video also shows a district under bombardment. The sound of explosions can be heard, as thick clouds of smoke rise into the sky.

Opposition activists say President Bashar al-Assad's forces have resorted increasingly to air power to hold back lightly armed insurgents.
