Anti-Islam protesters gather in Sweden

A heavy police presence greets right-wing protesters in Stockholm, Sweden as they rally against what they call Muslim "jihad".

The actvists - from Europe and America - say a growing influence of some Islamist ideologies represents a threat to the Western way of life.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LEADER OF GROUPS 'STOP ISLAMIZATION OF NATIONS' AND 'STOP ISLAMIZATION OF AMERICA', PAMELA GELLER, SAYING:

"What we are fighting is a global ideology. There are no borders, there are no nationalities, we oppose the most radical and extreme ideology on the planet and that is why the time is right and the time is now for a counter-Jihad."

Hundreds of counter-demonstrators called that nonsense, and chanted "No Nazis on our streets."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) STOCKHOLM RESIDENT AND COUNTER-DEMONSTRATOR, CHARLOTTE BYDAER, SAYING:

"I'm here to make a statement, to defend I think what I see as vulnerable groups in society, against nasty tendencies also that are getting new ground in Sweden today."

While there were no reports of violence, police said they arrested several people taking part in the counter demonstration.
