Caught in the crossfire in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Government troops head to the front lines in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

There are reports of heavy fire as Congolese forces clash with rebels in the eastern part of the country. Both sides claim to have pushed each other from their positions.

Many civilians have been caught in the crossfire.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) DISPLACED PERSON, ROGER ABIBU, SAYING:

"He was sitting at home when the rebels came down from the mountains. And when they started shooting they injured the child. "

A rebellion launched in April has already forced some 260,000 people to flee their homes. The U.N. has said said neighboring Rwanda is backing the rebels. Rwanda denies those charges.
