Obama calls Colorado killings a heinous crime

In his weekly address, U.S. President Barack Obama called the shootings at a movie theater in Colorado Friday a reminder that life is fragile and promised that the federal government will do all it can to seek justice for the "heinous crime."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING :

"We are still gathering all the facts about what happened, but we do know that the police have one suspect in custody. And the federal government stands ready to do everything necessary to bring whoever's responsible for this heinous crime to justice."

On Friday, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 59 at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie in a Denver suburb.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING :

"Even as we come to learn how this happened and who's responsible, we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings; such evil is senseless - beyond reason."

Police took 24 year old James Holmes into custody Friday. He is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.
