The site of a deadly bus crash in Nepal.

At least nine people were killed on Monday when their bus veered off the country's main transport artery and plunged into a river.

More than 18 others were injured in the accident, about 80 kilometres west of the capital Kathmandu.

The area is considered particularly dangerous during the monsoon season, which lasts roughly from June through August, when landslides are common.

Monday's accident took place just one day after at least 35 pilgrims, most of them from India, were killed when a bus plunged into an irrigation canal in southwestern Nepal.
