Varanasi, or Kashi, is one of the oldest living cities in the world. It is the ultimate destination of all Hindu pilgrims searching for moksha from the cycle of birth and re-birth. According to "Mas'ir-i-'Alamgiri" written by Saqi Must'ad Khan, the official historian in the court of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the original Kashi Vishwanath Temple was razed to the ground on the orders of the emperor, himself. The present Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built by Ahalya Bai Holkar of Indore in 1776. The spire and ceilings of Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi were plated with 820 Kilograms of Gold gifted by Ranjit Singh in 1839.
