Queen unveils WW2 bomber memorial

Britain's Queen Elizabeth unveils a memorial to the tens of thousands of airmen who died in the Second World War.

The Bomber Command Memorial in London's Green Park remembers the sacrifice of the 55,573 British Royal Air Force crew who lost their lives in the war.

The design of the memorial's roof is inspired by a Vickers Wellington aircraft and incorporates sections of aluminum recovered from a bomber plane shot down over Belgium in May 1944.

The ceremony concluded with a flypast by the bomber command's last flying Lancaster Bomber, which dropped poppies over the park as a message of remembrance for those who died.

The Bomber Command was formed in 1936 with a mission to attack German airbases, troops and industrial complexes connected to the war effort.
