Charity group tackles maternal deaths in Kenya

Masaai warriors, also known as Morans, are attempting to tackle the issue of maternal deaths in their community, where the figures are high.

They are attending meetings organised by the African Medical and Research Foundation, and some are expected to receive medical training.

Out of every 100,000 births in Kenya, 622 women do not survive. That figure is more than 25 times worse than the United States.

The causes are poverty, but there are links as well to cultural issues. Masaai women do not eat nutritious foods during pregnancy, and female genital cutting is common, which increases the risk of emergency caesarians.
