Croatian generals convicted for war crimes

A UN war crimes tribunal has convicted two former Croatian army generals for the persecution and murder of ethnic Serbs during the 1990's.

Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac were sentenced for their roles in the four-year war between Croatia and Serbia, started when Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia.

In August 1995 they launched Operation Storm, seizing back control of Croatia's Krajina region from ethnic Serb separatists.

More than 300 Serbs were killed in the operation and about 90,000 were forced to flee.

Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan reports.
