Rescue workers dig through the smoldering wreckage of a deadly plane crash in Lagos that killed at least 153 people.

The Dana Air flight, which took off in Abuja, smashed into a building not far from the commercial center's airport on Saturday.

Authorities are still investigating the incident as family members of the victims struggle to come to terms with the tragedy.

"It is simply too much to take in at one time, really. Ordinary people trying to earn a living ending up so tragically and untimely, the families, the pilots, the crew, young Nigerians whose lives have been so drastically and suddenly cut short. It is a very, very traumatic and painful experience."

Residents nearby said the crash stunned onlookers who heard blasts echo as the plane hit the ground.

Nigerian operators are known for their poor flight safety record, although it has improved in recent years.
