Police rush people to evacuate a popular mall in downtown Toronto as they search for a suspect in a shooting spree.

Witnesses say someone began shooting in the food court area of the Eaton Center, a popular mall, in downtown Toronto.

Seven people were shot: at least one person has died.

Major gun violence is rare in Canada due to its strict laws on handguns so people who saw the incident were terrified.

"I couldn't get a clear, couldn't get a clear image of him I guess maybe because I was so terrified. When he pulled out that gun, he just started firing up in the air and he started yelling. It was kind of hard to hear too exactly what he was saying because a bunch of people were screaming. Everyone panicked."

"I just hear like five or six gunshots and then people screaming and start running."

"We saw people, like terror in their faces, so when we saw that, we all ran into a little room."

Police say a 25-year old man has died from his injuries... two other people including a 13 year old boy are in critical condition from gunshot wounds.

The suspect is still at large.
