US-led forces have now been In Afghanistan for 3,338 days, the same amount as the ultimately unsuccessful occupation by Soviet forces in the 1980s.

Afghanistan has been referred to as the 'Graveyard of Empires' as it has never been successfully conquered by a foreign army.

Many military veterans who had fought with the Soviet Union's army against the Mujahideens in Afghanistan have been left with entrenched emotional scars due to the war.

In an exclusive interview, a Russian veteran has told Al Jazeera his heartwrenching account of the Soviet conflict and urges the US-led forces to withdraw from the country.
