The Sudanese government says its forces have killed 40 rebels in clashes in northern Darfur.
The clashes come just two weeks before a referendum in Sudan which could see the country split in two.
And as the Sudan People's Liberation Movement prepares to rule a potential new state in the south, its members in the north are feeling under threat.
