In Columbus New Mexico the corrupting influence of Mexican drug cartels is so strong that almost the entire local government is now in jail.

Columbus New Mexico is notorious for another kind of banditry.

In March , federal authorities arrested 10 residents, including Mayor Eddie Espinosa, police chief Angelo Vega and a village trustee.

They were charged with smuggling 400 guns to Mexican crime gangs, including dozens of AK-47 type automatic weapons.

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Columbus, New Mexico.
