The talk for months has been of a Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan, and Nato commanders have been pleading for more troops.

But there are new signs that the battle for control of the country is changing.

New groups are emerging to fight against the government of Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president.

Nowhere is the case better illustrated than in Herat, western Afghanistan, where a former senior official is now a wanted man by the government for leading one of these groups.

Zeina Khodr travelled to the province of Herat where she spoke exclusively to the former Mayor.
