Blood stains the ground of this church in a working class area of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

One person was killed and at least 15 wounded when a grenade was lobbed into the midst of a church congregation.

The deputy police chief said they have confirmed it was a grenade attack, but that no-one has yet claimed responsibility.

"So far we have confirmed 16 people, that is, one dead and 15 are admitted at Kenyatta, Nairobi Hospital or Guru Nanak - five are confirmed to be in critical condition."

Many of the wounded are being treated here in Kenyatta National Hospital.

A pastor at the church was one of the victims.

"I had just finished preaching and I was praying for people, so when I was just beginning to pray for people that's the time when we heard that blast, and of course there was smoke and of course seeing people injured."

At least 10 people were killed last month in a series of attacks in Nairobi and the port city of Mombassa.

The government has blamed these attacks on Somali-based rebels al Shabaab, saying they are retaliating for the deployment of Kenyan troops in Somalia last October.
