There is growing pressure on Hamas to reconcile with the rival Fatah movement of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

Many are urging unity in light of Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip - but how to achieve that is eluding both parties.

Hamas is excluded from any diplomatic discussions, as it is viewed by Israel and many western governments as a "terrorist" organisation.
